Vincent van der Voort says he regularly receives the most bizarre messages and requests via social media. Yet even the former professional sometimes has to blink twice at what people dare to ask him. During the podcast 'Darts Draait Door', Van der Voort was confronted with a highly unusual question from a student in Rotterdam.

The question came in via Instagram and was read out on the podcast. A student said he is a member of a student association and had been given a special task to earn a so-called tie. For that, he had to find a professional willing to throw a dart into his backside. The student addressed his request to Van der Voort and asked if he was willing to help.
The Dutchman did not need long to think about his answer. “No, I’m not going to do that,” Van der Voort replied firmly. When it was then suggested he could perhaps throw the dart really hard, his answer did not change. “No, I’m not going to do that. It also hurts, I have to say.”
While the situation sparked plenty of laughter, Van der Voort also pointed out that it would be far from sensible to use a dart that way. “There are quite a lot of bacteria on a dartboard as well. That can’t be good for you,” he noted. With a laugh, it was added that a tetanus shot would probably be involved straight away.
The strange task mainly raises, for Van der Voort, the question of what students are willing to do for their coveted tie. “But what do students actually do to earn a tie?” he wondered. His advice to anyone approaching him with such a request is crystal clear. “If someone said that to me, I’d say: then just keep that thing. Do me a favour.”

Michael van Gerwen also gets striking messages

Van der Voort then revealed he is not the only Dutch player confronted with unusual messages on Instagram. Michael van Gerwen also regularly gets messages that go quite far. According to Van der Voort, he even sees frequent messages to Van Gerwen from women offering themselves.

Van der Voort stressed that Van Gerwen does nothing with them. “Michael gets one woman after another offering herself in his Instagram,” he said. “But he doesn’t do anything with it, to be clear.”
Van der Voort appreciated the contrast with his own Instagram inbox. While Van Gerwen apparently receives such messages often, Van der Voort says he mainly gets requests that are just as bizarre, but of a completely different kind.
“And I say: I always get this kind of stuff,” he added with a wink. He then reeled off a few examples. “Whether I want to do a voiceover for an adult film at Meiden van Holland. Or now, whether I want to throw a dart into someone’s arse. What is all that about, man?”
The anecdote, according to Van der Voort, mainly shows how far people dare to go via social media. Darts professionals are now directly approachable for fans and followers on Instagram and other platforms. That often leads to good-natured interaction, but apparently also to requests that even a seasoned pro like Van der Voort can do little with.

For the student in question, there is little else to do but find another way to convince his student association. Van der Voort will in any case not be the one to help him secure his coveted tie. His verdict on the task was clear: “Then you just keep that tie.”
