Michael van Gerwen could put a provisional line through his fourth world title Monday night. He surprisingly went down 5-3 against Scott Williams in the quarterfinals of the World Darts Championship.

It was an exceptional series from Van Gerwen, who had impressed in the previous rounds with crushing victories over Keane Barry (3-0), Richard Veenstra (4-0) and Stephen Bunting (4-0). But against Williams, Van Gerwen was not a shadow of that player who managed to devastate his opponents. 'Mighty Mike' threw an average of just 93, and recorded a finishing percentage of barely 29 percent (11/38).

''Not the way I wanted to start 2024,'' Van Gerwen commented a few hours after his defeat on X. 'I didn't reach my A-game today and this loss hits hard,'' the three-time world champion concluded.
