Wright books hard-fought victory over defending champion De Sousa in Wolverhampton

Peter Wright has eliminated defending champion José de Sousa with a hard-fought victory at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

The Scot took a 2-0 lead in the early stages of the match, but then had to chase after it for a long time. De Sousa took over the lead with finishes of 76 and 62 and went into the break with a 3-2 lead. After the break Wright broke back, but his Portuguese opponent broke again with a 16-darter in the tenth leg.

Wright came out of the second break a lot sharper. With a 12-darter, 68 finish and an 80 check-out Snakebite turned a 4-6 deficit into a 7-6 lead. Moments later, the world number two led 9-8, but in that leg Wright missed five match darts. De Sousa then forced a deciding leg via double 10, which he was allowed to start himself. The Special One did that very badly without a treble in his first four turns. Wright took advantage and threw a 62 finish to win 10-9.
