Wright had to battle a power outage before the game which delayed the start but when he began despite being made to work hard by the Japanese ace; he got straight to business hitting eight 180s and a 94.5 average en route.
Wright took the first set when they returned to proceedings; Asada missed one set dart en route in the deciding leg and the former edged it 3-2.
Wright though as usual changed his darts mid match and this was a mistake at least for the time being as he missed a dart for the second set; Asada hit tops to edge it and level up the contest.
'Snakebite' wasn't disheartened by that though; he reeled off a Shanghai 120 checkout as well as a 65 checkout to double his lead. Asada kept coming back at him though and hit a 116 checkout to trail 2-1.
Despite that, Wright claimed the set 3-1 to go 2-1 up in a match that could go any way. This was proven with Asada making it 2-2 with a 104 checkout but despite that Wright went 3-1 up.
He added to that with a 131 checkout but was broken back by Asada with a 103 checkout. The sensational turned into the sublime as Wright smashed in a 157 checkout to go within a leg only for Asada to steal a set back to make it 2-3 to Wright going into an important juncture in proceedings.
Asada asked the question early on with a 130 checkout but Wright claimed the tie from there with a surge towards the end of the set to finish off a brilliant start to the tournament.
