Peter Wright became two time World Champion on Monday evening defeating Michael Smith at the 2021/22 PDC
World Darts Championship.
Wright won 7-5 coming from 5-4 down to seal three sets on the spin as Smith's hopes were once again dented.
"She's back. I said to Jo (his wife) yesterday, it would be nice to get the trophy back and have a photo with the Matchplay and the Players Championship Finals and the World Cup," said Wright post match.
Wright found what looked like an extra gear but he didn't see it as that, he called both their performances terrible for the whole match.
"It wasn't an extra gear. Well the whole match was missing from both of us I think. We both played terrible darts, I was telling myself off and you should never tell yourself off in a game. I've learnt that in the past and obviously I didn't learn it quick enough otherwise I would have played quicker earlier."
"I started to feel comfortable when I came back and I thought I've stopped telling myself off. I'm not moving my shoulder too much, I'm not moving the arm too much and I thought if I just did that, it'd work."
Becoming an all-time great and next battle
Now Wright has joined the annuls of the all-time greats joining Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor, John Part, Gary Anderson and Adrian Lewis as the only players to win the PDC edition more than once.
"I'm very proud of myself and I've just learnt that over all the years playing the greats. Playing against Phil (Taylor), all the beatings he used to give me.
But he has now set his next target: to be World Number One.
"I'm sure there will be lots of battles this year. He'll be World Number One, I'll be World Number One but at the end of it, I should be World Number One at the end of the year. I'll be the first Scotsman to be World Number One."
