The
World Cup of Darts gets underway on Thursday evening. Perhaps more unfancied than they have been in the past are Scotland.
Peter Wright though is determined to prove the doubters wrong.
Wright is a two time World Cup of Darts winner in 2019 and 2021 and will be reunited with Gary Anderson at this year's event. “Gary’s form has been fantastic,” praised Wright. “Gary has been hitting so many ton-plus averages on the floor. I wish I could get back to my ton-plus averages, but playing for my country adds that pressure which will make me focus and concentrate.”
Whilst Anderson has indeed been resurgent in 2023, Wright has had plenty of struggles, most recently being dumped out of Players Championship 14 on Sunday with a record low average of just 75. As Snakebite searches for a winning formula he's been seen playing with an adapted grip. At the World Cup however, Wright will be keeping it simple.
“The different grip is something I want to bring into my game later in the year. I used to throw like that when I was a youngster,” he explains. “I don’t want to ruin my chances of winning the World Cup with Gary by experimenting, so I’m going to concentrate on my normal throw, and then maybe use my old throw at the Matchplay.”
