"Your doubles were as bad as your haircut" - Jurjen van der Velde target of ridicule on social media after 2025 UK Open exit

Jurjen van der Velde performed well at the 2025 UK Open last weekend. The 22-year-old Dutchman reached the fifth round at Butlins in Minehead, before eventually he lost 10-2 to former UK Open champion Nathan Aspinall. Despite his strong performances over the weekend, after his exit Van der Velde was in the receiving end of some nasty messages on social media.
Van der Velde lost his PDC Tour Card at the end of 2024, but because of his good performance on the Development Tour he was still allowed to participate in the UK Open this year. He had to start in the first round, but quickly took wins against Tytus Kanik, Bradley Brooks, Keane Barry and Adam Lipscombe to reach the last 32 in Minehead.
As mentioned, in the last 32 he could not do much against former UK Open winner Aspinall however. Van der Velde was obviously satisfied with his strong performance afterwards, although he got some nasty messages from 'fans' of the sport on social media.
"Haha omg what a mismatch. Your doubles were as bad as your haircut," the person wrote. Van der Velde then shared the message on Facebook, asking: "Do I have such a bad haircut?"
Van der Velde is unfortunately not the first and in all likelihood not the last darter to receive negative messages on social media. Previously, Jules van Dongen and Richard Veenstra, among others, revealed that they received the most reprehensible messages, mainly from gamblers.
Despite all this, this strong performance could put Van der Velde back on track for a strong 2025. Late last year he narrowly lost the final of the World Youth Championship against his compatriot Gian van Veen after missing several matchdarts. As a result, he dramatically missed out on the World Darts Championship and also lost his PDC Tour Card.

It is not that bad a hair style, Littler has terrible hair but Rydz has some kind of bird nest gaffer taped to his head, absolutely dreadful.
Jeeezzzzz …. Some of these dart players need to grow a pair, its a few hurty words, your not on some army frontline fighting for your life.

- I agree. There needs to be a points system and preferably just a rolling one year. World Championship should earn the most points though it can be argued that the current qualification system does see a fair few players qualify from regional country qualifiers who would struggle to hold down a place on the Pro Tour. If prize money won is going to remain as the determining factor for ranking then the World Championship should just consist of the 128 Tour Card Holders. Another option would be to take the World Championship out of the rankings and have it as the stand alone pinnacle that you qualify for by winning certain tournaments or your ranking position, sort of like a GSOD+.Mysstree05-04-2025
