René Eidams is currently at the low point of his career. Yet there are no worries that he won't go to to reach a personal peak.

"I firmly believe that one day I will get my Tour Card and then make my way to the top", Eidams told DartsNews in an interview.

The German believes in himself, and sees the positives in anything that may help him come closer to his long-lasting goal.

"Getting the Tour Card is a permanent goal of mine. Until then, any little success will do me good."

Early promise

Eidams was aware of his potential long before his breakthrough moment at the 2016 World Championship, when he had Michael van Gerwen on the brink of defeat. He got a lot of attention after the spectacular 3-2 loss at the Ally Pally, but took it in his stride.

"I was aware a long time before that I have a lot to offer and can achieve a lot," said Eidams.

"It was all pretty new to me, but I tried not to let it get too close to me. Of course you have to make sure you to get the best out of it, what I did relatively well."

Minor setback

Despite his effusive confidence, the 30-year-old has had moments of doubt. A charted course to the top has been checked multiple time by an inability to gain a PDC Tour Card. The most galling of those setbacks came in 2018, when a PDC Tour Card narrowly eluded him at European Q-School.

He had to deal with the mental ramifications for a long time. "I was very disappointed every time, especially last year - it gnawed at me. Although I felt really good, I then began to have self-doubt about myself."

But the uncertainty has never lasted long. Eidams, a regular in Germany's Super League and one of the nation's top prospects, is ready to make 2020 a landmark year.

"Meanwhile I'm mentally up to speed again and play better again," revealed the Hagen native.

"For this year I have set myself the goal not to relegate from the Super League in order to be able to fully attack next year."
