A former BDO World Trophy champion and a two-time finalist as well as fifth seed this year,
Peter Machin comes into a second appearance at the
Lakeside with prior pedigree and saw off Mike Gillet in straight sets to end Monday evening.
Machin last year came close to hitting a nine-dart finish and although there wasn't any of those exploits this time around, it was a solid display against Gillet with his action as ever rock solid.
In particular in the opening set, he started superbly. He threw two 180's and an 11-darter en route to breezing through the opener 3-0 against a tricky customer in the Welshman who is a teacher by day.
Gillet could've had the second set and it was missed opportunities at times that let him down. He got on the board throwing three maximums in the set but it was Machin who fell over the line to go one away from the win in sets. He sped away in set three with a 15 and 18 darter with Gillet's throw being broken but the Welshman hit back to force Machin to serve it out at 2-1. Serve it out he did and he now returns to face Cliff Prior in the third round who saw off Scott Walters yesterday.
It was a double Aussie success story as Brandon Weening followed in the footsteps of his father Wayne who competed on the World Championship stage many a time in the 70's and 80's. He saw off Jan Matsuda in a bit of a gruelling tie.
He produced finishes of 88 and 90 to take the first set 3-1. Matsuda levelled it up going into the break following a 93 checkout with a 14-darter to take it 3-1. But while both had sets on the board, it started to get a bit tight as Weening edged a scrappier third set edging closer to the finishing line but not convincingly. Matsuda went 2-1 up in the next set but spurned chance after chance to seal it and Weening sent it all the way. He broke on Matsuda's throw to seal it after again he missed a chance to claim the set. He returns to face Shane McGuirk who has been a real success story this week and given their opening displays, 'The Arrow' will be favoured.
