Today we start day 7 of the WDF World Championship 2024. At Lakeside Country Club, those in action on Thursday include tournament favorite Jimmy van Schie. Living legend Paul Lim will also make another appearance.
The afternoon session was opened by Carl Wilkinson and Thomas Junghans. Wilkinson, for it is his debut at the WDF World Championship this year, defeated Jacob Taylor and Benjamin Pratnemer in the first second rounds. Junghans, the ninth series head, is in the last sixteen like last year and thus hopes to get a step further this year.
Next up are Ralfs Laumanis and Lex Paeshuyse, who will face each other in the quarterfinals of the boys' tournament. Paeshuyse, who just last week managed to qualify for the final of the Junior Darts Corporation's World Cup, which will be held during the PDC's World Darts Championship, will be the one to watch. The barely 13-year-old Belgian is also the youngest participant at Lakeside this year.
Afterwards, we continue with the men's tournament as Peter Machin and Cliff Prior battle it out for a place in the quarterfinals. Machin won the 2017 BDO World Trophy and still starts this match as the favorite.
In the penultimate match of the afternoon session, Aileen de Graaf will make her first appearance this year. The Dutchwoman, who was last year's losing finalist at the WDF World Championship, will meet Japan's Mayumi Ouchi, who won 2-1 over Lorraine Hyde in the first round.
The afternoon session will be closed by Sybren Gijbels and Jason Brandon. Both the Belgian and the American are debutants at the WDF World Championship and can qualify for the quarterfinals. It will be their first mutual encounter.
Northern Irish duel
The evening session kicks off with an all Northern Irish duel as Neil Duff and Barry Copeland take on each other. Former WDF world champion Duff starts the duel as the clear favorite, yet he knows all too well that Copeland is not to be underestimated.
Van Schie-Bottenberg
After Kendji Steinbach and Archie Self took on each other in the quarterfinals of the youth tournament, it's Jimmy van Schie's turn to be in action for the second time this World Championship. The tall Dutchman won eight WDF ranking tournaments this year and is the top favorite for the overall victory. Moreover, in his opening match against Björn Lejon he made a special impression with an average of 98.98, nobody did better this World Championship. Van Schie will take on his compatriot Jarno Bottenberg for a place in the quarter-finals in what promises to be a high-class match.
The penultimate match of the day is the women's second-round match between Irina Armstrong and Sophie McKinlay, in which it will be especially watchable whether the 18-year-old Scot can follow up her shock victory from the first round against Lisa Ashton.
Living legend closes the evening
Rounding out the evening will be living legend Paul Lim and Gary Stone. The 70-year-old Lim is back at a World Championship at Lakeside for the first time since 1994, battling it out with Scot for a place in the quarterfinals.
Although the tournament cannot be televised in the UK until finals weekend, interested parties can follow the tournament via a live stream. All operations will be broadcast on the YouTube channel of GREAT! game. This means anyone with an Internet connection can watch all 10 tournament days for free, no matter where they are in the world.
The total prize pool for the WDF Lakeside World Championship includes £221,000 in prize money. That is a lot less than in 2023, when it was £257,000.
The main prize for the winner of the men's and women's tournament did remain the same. The winner in the men's will take home 50,000 pounds in prize money. The winner in the women's will receive a check for 25,000 pounds.
