Lerena Rietbergen brought her debut on the Lakeside stage to a successful conclusion. With a 2-0 victory over Maud Jansson, she qualified for the second round of the Women's World Cup in Frimley Green.
However, high quality was not what the 22-year-old Dutch showed. Rietbergen came to an average of just 59.37. Jansson was even below that with an average of 51.86 per turn.
A 26-darter and a 23-darter gave Rietbergen a 2-0 lead, before a leg in which both players missed a load of dimes. Jansson finally got on the scoreboard for the first time with a 37-darter. Rietbergen then hit a 23-darter to take the first set 3-1.
The level was not good in the second set either, but at least the doubles were found a lot faster. Via double 2 Rietbergen made it 1-0, after which she hit 20 and 40 to make it 2-0. Rietbergen is back in action Wednesday evening. Rhian O'Sullivan awaits her in the second round.
Dennis Nilsson, last year's semifinalist, needed only two sets to push Howard Jones aside. The Swedish darter won both the first and second sets 3-1, making it 2-0 for "The Strongman," who faces Gary Stone in the last 32.
