After Luke Littler, Mitchell Lawrie is the next emerging youth phenomenon. The 15-year-old top talent made his debut at the WDF World Championship at Lakeside last year and is now already number one on the amateur circuit.
After winning the British Open, Irish Classic, and Welsh Open in the seniors last year, he already tasted success earlier this season at the Scottish Classic.
A double followed last weekend. “Wee Sox,” as his nickname goes, won both the Slovak Classic and the Slovak Masters. In the final of the Slovak Classic, a silver-ranked event on the WDF circuit, he beat Franko Giuliani 5-3. He also defeated Andras Borbely 5-3 in the final of the Slovak Masters, a bronze-ranked tournament.
That double earned him the top spot in the WDF rankings. He now leads the standings with 756 points. That is 53 more than number two Jenson Walker, who at 19 is also regarded as a rising talent.
Number three in the standings is Leonard Gates with 699 points. Fourth place is held by Paul Krohne, the surprise winner of the Dutch Open Darts in Assen. In the final of that tournament he saw off Corné Groeneveld, who in sixth place is the highest-ranked Dutchman. Between them, Jason Brandon sits fifth.
The top 10 is completed by James Beeton, Alex Spellman, Neil Duff, and Jeff Smith. The highest-ranked Belgian is in seventeenth place. That spot is occupied by Francois Schweyen, who with 352 points has just over half the tally of number one Lawrie.
