Mitchell Lawrie has once again shown why he is regarded as one of the brightest talents in darts. The 15-year-old Scot was crowned winner of the WDF Gibraltar Open in the men’s event last weekend and added the youth title at the Gibraltar Classic to cap it off.
Lawrie produced a dominant run to the men’s title. He swept aside Matt Smith 4-0 in the first round, then averaged a superb 109.25 to beat Ruben Cañas López 4-1 in the last 32. Nico Bado (4-0) and Nick Fullwell (4-0) also had no answer to the Scot’s lofty standard.
In the semi-finals, Lawrie met stiffer resistance from Lewis Gurney. After a tight contest, he edged it 4-3 to book a place in the final against Marcus Maier.
There, the prodigy immediately set out his stall. Lawrie opened with a classy 12-darter, only for Maier to break straight back with a fine 110 checkout. The Scot then seized control, taking two consecutive legs in 14 darts to lead 3-1. After Maier reduced the deficit to 3-2, Lawrie allowed no way back and closed out the final emphatically, 5-2.
As if the men’s title were not enough, Lawrie also claimed the youth Gibraltar Classic. He began with a convincing 4-0 win over Thomas Neale, then defeated Freddie Watson 4-1. In the semi-finals, Lawrie had to dig deep against Jack Johnson, but he still came through 4-3.
In the final against Mason Teese, the Scot showcased his class once more. Averaging 101.63, he cruised to a 5-1 victory to complete a perfect weekend in Gibraltar.
Lawrie has long been regarded as one of the top prospects within the WDF. Last year, as a 15-year-old, he surprisingly reached the men’s Lakeside World Championship final, cementing his name on the international stage.
The future also looks highly promising for the young Scot. Lawrie turns 16 in November and will therefore meet the age requirement from January to make his Q-School debut. He is also set to be eligible next season to appear on the PDC Development Tour, where he can further test himself against the best of his generation.
