It's day two of the Melbourne Darts Masters, and Damon Heta is well and truly at it again.
Not satisfied with an incredible win in Brisbane, the DPA star is on the march in Melbourne. We'll get to him later. The second and last day of Melbourne Darts Masters starts with the top seed, and the in-form player. In this case, that's two different people entirely.
Haupai Puha was hoping that he could reverse last week's 6-2 defeat to Raymond van Barneveld. Instead, he was thumped 6-1. A scintillating showing and a 106 average from Barney makes him a dangerous prospect. Peter Wright, after another ill-judged darts swap, was lucky that Corey Cadby had very little in his locker. Could van Barneveld spring a surprise on Snakebite?
On paper, the second tie of the tournament is bound to be an absolute stunner. Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson aren't in the best of form. But given their immense talent and competitiveness, this tie's a powder keg that could go off, just as much as it could fizzle out. Both would like to claim the Melbourne Darts Masters title, for different reasons.
Wizard hoping for magic session
It really is no wonder that Damon Heta is planning a move to the UK and a shot at getting a
PDC Tour Card. If the Brisbane Darts Masters didn't show off his credentials enough, a stunning 6-1 mauling of James Wade really hammered it home. The Perth star is out for the Melbourne Darts Masters trophy, make no mistake. Rob Cross has a point to prove after losing last week's final against Heta. After Robbie King failed to test Voltage, Heta will definitely turn up the heat.
Daryl Gurney versus Simon Whitlock looks like the closest tie on paper. One stat that underlines that assumption is the first round averages: Gurney managed 97.57, Whitlock racked up 97.62. Both will score well - it might be all down to the doubles. Superchin's superb 75 per cent conversion rate on the doubles against Kyle Anderson would surely see him through, if he can replicate it on Sunday.
For anyone who was worried that Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld met for the last time ever on stage in
Rotterdam, there's a chance that the Dutch icons could clash again on Sunday evening. Or late morning, as it'll be here.
