Lisa Ashton has continued her form from the Women's Series onto the World Seniors stage with the Lancashire Rose registering her first win in these tournaments at the
World Seniors Darts Matchplay.
Ashton sealed an 8-5 win over qualifier Paul Hogan and will now face the first winner of the PDC version, Larry Butler later this evening in Hull.
Hogan missed 68 for an opening hold and Ashton returned for an early break on double five and she doubled her lead from there. ‘The Lancashire Rose’ had two darts to break again and make it 3-0 but Hogan finally settled after initially fluffing his lines on the 48.
But at the interval, Ashton wrestled back control at 4-2 up and she was halfway to the finishing line. This was furthered with a break of throw on return. She went 7-3 up and one away from victory before two sublime 15-dart legs from Hogan saw him back into the tie but after missing 101 for the match previously, Ashton returned for the same checkout to win it.
She was joined in the winners' circle by Brian Dawson who marked a winning debut on the World Seniors tour battling back from 7-5 to edge out Tony O'Shea 9-7.
Dawson pinned double eight to begin the tie and broke throw with a sluggish start from O’Shea. ‘Doggy’ pinned the first maximum of the match and missed 140 on double 10 but returned for the double five surviving pressure in the form of a 180 from O’Shea.
Another maximum was pinned followed by double eight for 3-0 and another break for the Barnsley thrower. But a break and an 80 checkout to consolidate saw O’Shea work his way back in at 3-2 down as he looked for another break for parity.
But for Dawson, he took the hold after a poor start to the leg and sat 4-2 up at the break in a race to eight. On return though, O’Shea kicked into gear again producing two 180’s in a leg en route to making it 4-4 breaking with a 41 checkout.
He followed that up with a 100 checkout to consolidate at 5-4 before Dawson stopped the rot with a 94 checkout at 5-5. A superb 148 saw the turnaround though sealed as he went 6-5 up. O’Shea missed the bull for an 86 checkout but three darts to hold from Dawson went begging and this allowed O’Shea to hit double eight to go one away at 7-5.
But Dawson fought back and pinned double nine for an 87 checkout and to send it all the way with a tie-break incoming. 137 left double 10 for Dawson to gain a break and go one away and he pinned double five to do so. He missed 102 for the match but returned for double 16 to seal it.
