Robert Thornton will hunt for a third title win at the World Seniors Darts Championship this weekend. 'The Thorn', lifted the Seniors crown in 2022 and 2023 as world champion, has already started the 2025 edition of the World Seniors Championship well with a 3-1 win against Darryl Fitton. In the quarter-finals this Saturday afternoon, he will now take on his compatriot Ross Montgomery.

Thornton played a good match and averaged just under 90 against Fitton. "It was tough," Thornton exhaled with a sigh of relief to open up his post-match press conference. "I've had a few battles with Darryl over the years and that was one of them!"

The 57-year-old Scot has been active with the seniors for several years. But this year's edition of the World Seniors Darts Championship especially has seen an influx of The Thorn's former PDC rivals such as Simon Whitlock, Mervyn King and Steve Beaton. In the process allowing Thornton to fly a little bit under the radar in 2025. "I don't think I've ever been favourite to win one of these Seniors events," he laughs. "But I think it's massive (the influx of new talent), I mean you look at the players in it now and I mean, if they think they're going to come in here and it'll be easy? No it ain't!"

After Thornton in 2022 and 2023, his fellow Scott John Henderson was the man to take the title last year. Hendo is also into the quarter-finals at the Circus Tavern this time around too, meaning the chances of the title heading to Scotland once again are still relatively high. "It's all on your game isn't it. I mean, you need to keep that consistency all the way through the day (Saturday ed.), and if you can't keep that, then you ain't going to win it," Thornton concludes.
