Jeff Smith will play two-time world champion Gary Anderson in the first round of the
PDC World Championship after beating Luke Humphries 2-0 in the preliminary round.
Smith opened in fine style and was ruthless on the doubles in an opening set in which all five legs went with the throw. The Canadian sealed his first ever Ally Pally leg with a fantastic 170 finish, adding a two-dart 82 combination and a 106 checkout to take the lead.
Humphries, who topped the Development Tour rankings this year after winning five events, checked out 94 in two darts to take the opening leg of the second set under serious pressure. But the 2016 BDO world runner-up was in fine form on the doubles, and again found the double in one dart to hold throw. A 180 in the third leg of the set put Smith in a fine position to break, and a sumptuous 126 checkout put him in pole position. The Silencer put himself in a strong position with some consistent scoring, leaving himself 74 to seal the win. It was never in doubt. A mightily impressive 95 average and 5/6 on doubles on debut means Smith will take on the Flying Scotsman later this evening.
