Kai Gotthardt took the weekly title on Saturday night in week 4 of the MODUS Super Series 9. The Tunnel stopped Jon Worsley's comeback in a thrilling final and defeated the Welshman 4-3. This makes The Tunnel the third German after Lukas Wenig and René Eidams to achieve a weekly victory in the MODUS Super Series.
Gotthardt began his tournament last Monday in Group A, where he competed against Jon Worsley, Dan Astbury, Tom Lonsdale, Steven Johnstone and Jim Mayer in round robin matches until Wednesday.
He finished fourth in this group with a total of 14 points and a leg difference of -4 and was given a second chance to play in the final on Saturday in Group C, which consisted of Chris Quantock, Jim Mayer, Killian McCormack, Dan Astbury and Joe Croft alongside the Esslingen player. Gotthardt seized this change 100 percent. He won this group with 18 points, losing only one match of the ten games played.
The final session was made up of Group A leaders Jon Worsley, Kai Gotthardt and Joe Croft from Group C and Shane McGuirk, Shaun McDonald and Adam Lipscombe from Group B, with Worsley, Croft and McDonald making up Group 1 of the final night. Worsley beat Croft 4-1, but lost to McDonald 3-4, with the latter beating Croft 4-2 to take him and Worsley through to the semi-finals.
Gotthardt, who played in Group 2, defeated McGuirk 4-3, but lost 3-4 to Lipscombe, who had lost his match against McGuirk 1-4, so Gotthardt had the better leg difference and progressed to the semi-finals together with McGuirk. Here The Tunnel met Shaun McDonald, whom he eliminated with a whitewash.
In the final, the German took on Worsley. At the beginning it looked as if Gotthardt would have no problems to leave the Welshman behind. With a 20-darter, a break in 17 darts and a 19-darter, Gotthardt was soon 3-0 up. But now Worsley found his game and took the 3-1 in 17 darts after the 29-year-old German had missed the double 18 for the match.
Worsley broke in 13 darts to make it 3-2 and equalized after Gotthardt missed another match darts to make it 3-3. He sealed the match and played his best leg of the match. He closed the match with a beautiful 14-darter and let his relief run wild.
From December 7, all the weekly winners of the MODUS Super Series 9 will compete against each other for the main prize. Gotthardt will now also be represented here, even if it could be a challenge for him, provided he wins the Europe Super League and thus the ticket to the World Darts Championship, which will be held from December 15.
