Bobby George is one of the most recognisable figures in darts.
The Bobby Dazzler played in the BDO World Championship 15 times between 1980 and 2002. He was the runner-up twice. The first came on his debut in 1980, as he lost to Eric Bristow in a classic at Jollees in Stoke-on-Trent. 14 years later, he succumbed to a thrashing at the hands of John Part at the Lakeside. But the bejewelled Londoner was one of the world's best players in the 1980s, and won the News of the World Championship twice.
72-year-old George is still a popular personality and media figure. Among his many duties in recent years has been ambassadorial work for mainstream manufacturer Winmau. It was announced on Tuesday that the King of Bling will continue in his role for the next three years. He will represent Winmau at nationwide events, while offering insights on their range of products.
“I’m a lucky boy. Darts has been good to me and is a massive part of my life. Like Winmau, I’ve been involved in almost every part of the evolution of the modern game from its explosion in popularity in the 70s through to the modern phenomenon it is today," said George.
"I’m honoured to be part of the Winmau family and to be working with them to keep promoting our wonderful sport. May the darts be with you!”
Winmau Sales and Marketing Director Ian Flack added: "Quite simply, Bobby is Mr. Darts.
“He comes across on TV exactly as he is in real life – down to earth, honest and great company. But that hides an encyclopaedic knowledge and understanding of the game. Not only is Bobby a tremendous ambassador for Winmau, his input from a technical perspective is invaluable.”
