Jonny Clayton, winner of Players Championship 22, is into his first Major Semi-final. The Ferret defeated Steve Beaton 10-8 after coming back from 7-4 down.
In what wasn't the classiest of affairs the opening 5 legs all went with throw. Beaton opened the match with a 180 and mopped up double 12 for a clean 13 dart leg. Clayton returned the favour in the next. Opening up with his first of 2 180's in the match. a 14 dart leg was enough to seal this one.
The 5th leg was the first one to go beyond the 15 dart mark. Beaton holding in 18 to take the leg and the advantage into the first interval.
The second mini-session was also won by Beaton 3-2. A break in the 8th leg backed up by a hold in the 9th was enough for a 6-3 lead. Clayton responded with his highest check out of the match, a 120, to keep himself within touching distance of the 1996 World Champion.
Beaton would again go 3 legs clear at the beginning of the third and final session, bringing the score into a 7-4 the lead. Clayton then found his feet. The Welshman, who has already recorded wins over Gerwyn Price and a resurgent Stephen Bunting, reeled off the next 5 legs to lead the Bronzed Adonis 9-7. Beaton missing darts to take two of those legs.
Beaton would win one more leg before the end, holding throw in the 17th to trail 9-8. Two visits below 60 i n the scoring phase of the 18th just wasn't enough to keep up with The Ferret, Clayton finishing 70 in three darts to secure his spot in tonight's final session. Clayton will now face Rob Cross for a spot in the final.
