BDO ace Durrant seals quarter-final spot

Glen Durrant reached the Grand Slam of Darts quarter-finals after a 10-8 win over a sub-par Dave Chisnall at the Wolves Civic. BDO world champion Durrant, who fell at this stage last year against Raymond van Barneveld, was able to hold Chisnall at bay throughout.
A litany of botched attempts at finishing began in the opening leg. Chisnall, looking for a single one for double two, drifted into the 18 bed. Durrant made no mistake to punish and steal an instant break. If his first leg was won with a stroke of luck, Durrant's second was secured with a stroke of genius. A 161 checkout, with Chisnall waiting on an achievable 100, made it 2-0.

'Chizzy' had some respite in the third leg. Durrant struggled to set up, and a well-timed 180 meant Chisnall could get over the line to reduce the deficit. Another maximum put Chisnall in a good position but, after the St Helens thrower missed tops to check out 82, the pride of Teeside held his nerve to make it 3-1.
Chisnall got another leg back, but 'Duzza' kept his opponent at arm's length to go into the first break 4-2 up. The second session was a sorry tale of missed darts to win legs - eight in total - for Durrant.
In the seventh leg, both took turns to pass up good chances. First Chisnall missed double 16 for a 106 out. Then Durrant, who had hit a 180, wired double 18 for a 110. Chisnall chased his doubles around the board, before Durrant missed another three to break. Chisnall stopped the rot with a well-time double 1.
The pair found the throw as easy to break as to hold, and Chisnall checked out 62 to level the scores after Durrant missed two darts at tops. After Chisnall narrowly missed the double 11 for a 142 out, Durrant's last dart in hand at double ten took the 11th leg. Yet two more missed chances to extend his lead meant Chisnall could take a 5-5 scoreline into the third session.
That session did not start well for Chisnall. Durrant's fourth 180 of the match led to the BDO star taking the leg with an 87 checkout, as Chisnall stood stranded just fewer than 150 points adrift. Chisnall's fourth maximum came in the next leg, but the end result was the same, and Durrant regained a two-leg lead.
The former Grand Slam finalist grabbed a 14-dart leg with throw, but his hopes of a break were dashed as Durrant's rebuttal came in the form of a fifth 180 and a 12-darter. Durrant faltered in the 15th leg with the finish line in sight, leaving Chisnall a simple 36 checkout despite 'Chizzy' hitting single six to set up when aiming for a ten.
Another maximum for the Middlesbrough man set him back on track, and a 71 checkout in two darts put him within a leg of victory. Chisnall, unwilling to go out without a fight, took out 80 in two darts to make it 9-7. But Durrant opened the 18th leg with four perfect darts and finished with tops to seal a quarter-final against Peter Wright or Stephen Bunting.
