Mensur Suljovic cruised into the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts with a 10-2 thrashing of Berry van Peer, averaging more than 105 along the way. Dutchman van Peer, who has inspired darts fans the world over by battling both top players and dartitis, had no answer to Suljovic's supreme finishing.
The Austrian opened the tie in perfect fashion, crashing in a 110 checkout before quickly breaking the van Peer throw. Van Peer was not as crippled by the mental block as in his group stage games, but his average and finishing fell way behind Suljovic's.
Another hold and break made it 4-0, before an 80 finish ended the first session with a whitewash still a possibility. Scoring was not proving too much of a problem for van Peer; his third 180 kept his average at 96 after six legs. Unfortunately, it was also 6-0; Suljovic took out 81 in two darts for an 11-dart leg.
'The Gentle' kicked off the seventh leg with six perfect darts, before a 90 finish made it 7-0, with a 78 per cent success rate on the doubles. The loudest cheer of the match was reserved for the eighth leg, when van Peer finally got on the board with a 96 checkout to the delight of himself, Suljovic and the Wolves Civic crowd.
Most surprising was Suljovic's finishing in the ninth; not only two misses at the double, but the Austrian's beloved double 14. Double seven proved no problem, however. Van Peer still had some magic in him, and went into the break with a wonderful 119 finish to make it 8-2.

But a comeback was not forthcoming. Suljovic, who averaged a superb 115.7 in the second session, did not relent. After van Peer missed two darts to break, the world number seven made no mistake to go within a leg of victory. And Suljovic wasted no time, sealing a quarter-final tie with either Gary Anderson or Michael Smith with a 63 finish.
Van Peer, who maintained an average around the 95 mark throughout, earned himself even more respect and admiration in spite of Suljovic's comfortable win. If performances like this can be maintained, Suljovic stands a very strong chance of adding the Grand Slam of Darts title to his Champions League crown.
