Day two of the German Darts Championship certainly broke the mould.
Even the afternoon session bucked a trend, with the seeds all winning. That was just the third time in
European Tour history that all the seeds had survived a session. We were heading for the same in the evening session as well. But then Ricky Evans, Keegan Brown and Mervyn King breathed new life into the German Darts Championship. The top seed is out, and things are looking pretty interesting going into day three.
See you in Belfast
Peter Wright was dealt a massive boost by Michael van Gerwen's rare early exit and the hands of Keegan Brown. He'll feel like a return to the European Tour winners' circle is within his grasp. But Jermaine Wattimena will feel similarly, and is building momentum thanks to a 6-1 thrashing of Steffen Siepmann. Adrian Lewis meets Joe Cullen in what should be a game rife with big scores. Cullen did well to see off Nathan Aspinall, and faces another tough challenge here. That's followed by a meeting of Premier League stars, with Rob Cross facing Daryl Gurney. The pair will meet again in Belfast four days from now, so this match doubles up as a Premier League warm-up. Ian White edged past the biggest of banana skins in the form of Jamie Hughes; his next challenge is beating Stephen Bunting, who had the same experience against Dimitri van den Bergh. Then James Wade looks to stop Darren Webster's mini-renaissance in its tracks.
Golden Brown
Two of the three remaining non-seeds meet in the sixth tie. Ricky Evans produced a stirring comeback to see off Mensur Suljovic, the second time in a row that he's come from behind to win at the 2019 German Darts Championship. Mervyn King, who was ruthless against Dave Chisnall, need to keep that mean streak up to prevent Evans from repeating the feat.
There's an all-Welsh clash in the penultimate game of the session. Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton play each other knowing that Michael van Gerwen is no longer in their quarter, so the winner of the last afternoon match awaits them.
That game is between James Wilson and Keegan Brown. The performance put on by Brown to knock out van Gerwen was nothing short of astonishing. If he can do the same against Wilson, who was inches from defeat at the hands of Mario Robbe, he'll be in his first stage quarter-final since the German Darts Grand Prix a year ago.
