The much-publicised UK Open confusion led to the first ever major picked up without a crowd to celebrate it. Earlier that week, nobody at all turned up for an abandoned Premier League night in Exeter. Aside from a fire alarm-affected Players Championship 5, things have run fairly smoothly since. But the German Darts Grand Prix has brought about the return of off-stage shenanigans. A
fire at London Stansted has affected the travel plans of a host of participants. But the show goes on, and the second
European Tour event of the year is set up to be a good one.
The afternoon session kicks off with Luke Humphries taking on William O'Connor. The Irishman has impressed recently. His performances in qualifying for this event were certainly eye-catching. The winner of that tie takes on a very shaky Gerwyn Price tomorrow. After Humphries and O'Connor comes a match between two European starlets. Rowby-John Rodriguez and Max Hopp would both dearly love a decent run to remind the public, and perhaps themselves, of their mercurial talent. Hopp, who thrashed Kevin Munch to qualify for the event, will have a raucous crowd on his side.
One of the more intriguing ties of the first round follows them. Danny Noppert and Krzyzstof Ratajski, BDO rivals last year, meet on the Munich stage. Whoever wins the tie will be more than a match for Mensur Suljovic in the second round. Nathan Aspinall and Steve Lennon do battle for the dubious honour of playing Michael van Gerwen, before Maik Langendorf takes on Keegan Brown. Ryan Meikle and Scott Taylor then get some useful stage experience, with the winner meeting Daryl Gurney in round two. Paul Rowley's European Tour debut comes against Steve West, before Darren Webster and Jan Dekker wrap up the session.
