Reigning champion Michael Smith is out of contention. His exit leaves the tournament potentially open for new winner. Michael van Gerwen and James Wade, the two remaining players who have won this title before, still have more than a fighting chance. Day Two saw seven seeds tumble out. That means that there are more than a few dark horses for the seventh
PDC European Tour event of the year.
Van Gerwen is the favourite, as he is wherever he goes. Mighty Mike's third round opponent would perhaps be the rank outsider even without the prospect of playing the reigning PDC European champion. Andy Boulton hadn't made much of an impact on the 2018 European Tour before wins over Ritchie Edhouse and Stephen Bunting propelled him into the Sunday session. He'll have to step up a gear to challenge the Dutchman, who averaged 107.86 in victory over Vincent van der Voort.
Another seed-slayer is Max Hopp. After knocking out Ian White, the ever-popular German must overcome Austrian Darts Open champion Jonny Clayton to reach the evening's quarter-finals. Daryl Gurney saw off compatriot Brendan Dolan on Saturday and now takes on Steve West, who edged out Darren Webster. Rob Cross hung on for dear life against Cristo Reyes, and somehow survived. He'll have to improve to avoid a similar ordeal against Simon Whitlock in the only tie to be contested by two seeds.
Jermaine Wattimena, who ended Smith's retention hopes, meets Gerwyn Price in the fifth of eight third round ties. That's followed by Paul Nicholson taking on Joe Cullen, who put in arguably the performance of the second round. The Rockstar's 107.97 average, which accounted for Darius Labanauskas, would surely see him through to the latter stages of the tournament if repeated. Adrian Lewis and James Wade then do battle in a heavyweight tussle, before Peter Wright meets Chris Dobey, whose darting regicide of Mervyn King continues a fine run.
The action begins at 12pm and is live on
PDC TV.
