Jim Williams has defeated
Conan Whitehead to progress from the second round for the first time. The Welshman joins compatriot Wayne Warren in the last 8 after overcoming a 2 leg deficit in the deciding set to prevail over the Barbarian.
The match started in tense fashion. Both understanding the nature of the game and feeling the pressure. The fact the 2 remain pairs partners on the tour not helping either. Neither play found top rhythm as Whitehead took the first 2 sets. Williams responded with the next 2 as the duo grew in stature. Upping the scoring power as the match went on. That resulted in Williams breaking the Whitehead throw to take set 5, putting him just one away from the match.
Once again, with there back to the wall, one of the 2 responded by stepping up. Whitehead taking set 6 to set up the decider. The Barbarian would take the first 2 legs in the decider. That prompted another response, this one the greatest of them all. Williams fired in a 161 finish to save his tournament, before coming from way behind to break Whitehead and lead 3-2.
The Quiff wrapped it all up in the 6th leg and will now face the favourite Glen Durrant in his first quarter final in Frimley Green.
