Daniel Larsson was impressive in the first match of the afternoon against Robert Thornton with the Swede who has won multiple PDC Nordic and Baltic events seeing off the experienced multiple time major champion.
Larsson hit seven 180's and some of his best checkouts included a brilliant 125 outshot and despite Thornton clawing a set back, he was always up against it versus the classy Swede.
A scrappy first leg between the pair resulted in Thornton holding his throw with a 74 checkout on double 20. Larsson busted his score but Thornton didn’t punish and the Swede levelled up. He hit a 180 in the following leg to break the throw of the Thorn and go into the third leg throwing for the set. Larsson claimed the first set with a classy 125 checkout to gain the advantage in the early going.
Thornton blew the chance of an early break in the following leg. He took out 106 and then broke the throw of Larsson to go one away from clawing a leg back himself. Larsson wasn’t done though and broke back to force a deciding leg in the second set.
Both players missed multiple darts at doubles and Thornton hit double 20 to claw a set back. Larsson hit back once again smashing in a 107 checkout to break followed by a fifth 180 and a double 16 to double his lead. Thornton missed darts to break again and Larsson pinned double ten to make it two-one in sets.
He pinned double six to begin the next set but missed darts to break which allowed Thornton to hold. ‘The Thorn’ finally broke the throw of Larsson in the set to go one away from tying the game up. A 66 checkout under pressure from Larsson put him one away again from winning the match. He claimed the win by hitting double sixteen with Thornton needing 141 to win the set.
