Zoran Lerchbacher is into the second round of the World Championships, defeating the experienced Mervyn King in a bizzare contest.
The Austrian thrower fell 2 sets behind King, missing darts in both deciding legs to trail. But Lerchbacher produced a fabulus comeback in the final 2 sets. All the while, with Kings back torubles playing up, and after stopping in the third set due to a lighting issue.
SET 1 (King 3-2 Lerchbacher)
The set went on throw all the way until the deciding leg, Lerchbacher could have wrapped it up but missed darts to win the decider. King stepped in to take 56, after Zoran missed at the ame target. Noticeably King opted to use the D20 rather then D16 throughout a lot of the encounter.
SET 2 (King 3-2 Lerchbacher)
This set was pretty much identical to set 1. Both Players holding throw in the first 4 legs. Howevr the 5th was also a hold instead of the Break. Mervyn King again taking the set to lead 2-0.
SET 3 (King 1-3 Lerchbacher)
The beginning of the third set was entwinned in controversy. A lighting issue meant both players had to leave the stage after the first leg. Referee Russ Bray opting to take the players off the stage.
The players returned to the same conditions, a slight shadow now following the darts due to the blown bulb, although it was what followed, rather then the lighting issue that changed the encounter. King Bent down to collect a dart and twinged his back. The englishman then appeared in pain throught the rest of the match. Barely able to stand to the oche on more then one occasion.
Lerchbacher took the set 3-1, but King did have darts to level at 2-2. Again throwing at his newly favoured D20 busting his visit.
SET 4 (King 0-3 Lerchbacher)
Zoran reeled off a further 3 straight legs in this set to take his running total to 5. 15,21 and 17 the number of darts used to win the set.
SET 5 (King 0-3 Lerchbacher)
Again King failed to win a leg. Zoran in the end winning 8 straight legs. Even if King had of been git he would have struggled to keep pace with the Austrian in this set. Zoran finished in legs of 12, 15 and 14 for a 112 average in the set and wrapping up victory.
Lerchbacher now awaits the winner of James Wade vs Keegan Brwon. A game that he will believe is winnable after tofays performance.
