Monk had to come down from 3-1 to defeat Marko Puls 6-3 with three ton plus checkouts along the way including a 147. This continues a resurgence for ‘Mad Monk’ who will look to use a scare of sorts as a catalyst for future success in Munich.
Smith saw off Mark Barilli and was also impressive on his doubles but throughout with six out of nine on his way to a 6-3 victory.
For Brown though it was a tough route through with ‘The Needle’ spurning chances to go 4-0 up and then having to produce a brilliant leg out of nowhere to claim a deciding leg win.
Finally Payne reached the second round courtesy of victory over Jyhan Artut with a 6-2 win including 55 percent on the doubles and three 180’s from the Gravesend ace.
