Scotland defeat Republic of Ireland to win maiden World Cup of Darts title in Hamburg

Scotland have done it! The team of Gary Anderson and Peter Wright have claimed their maiden World Cup of Darts title breaking the dominance of Netherlands and England in the process with a 3-1 victory over Republic of Ireland.

Alarm bells would have started to ring when Steve Lennon took the first point and in reality William O'Connor should have won his tie as well but the Scottish pair produced their best darts when it mattered most and lived up to their form all weekend which has seen them be the team to beat.

In the first tie, Lennon was brilliant from the outset taking the first two legs including a break of throw to go halfway to the finishing line in the early going; with double 10 coming to his aid on both occasions which he was pinning for fun during the previous game.

Anderson though came back to hit identical 85 finishes; but despite that Lennon didn't fade away and broke the throw again to go one away from the first point.

He finished it off with style with an excellent 110 checkout to claim the first point with an average of 96. The pressure was now firmly on Wright; as he took on William O'Connor.

Wright started off well against O'Connor checking out 91 against the throw to claim the opening leg; but 'The Magpie' broke back immediately and then landed double 20 for a 2-1 lead. Wright came back and held his throw.

O'Connor missed darts to go one away and hold his throw and Wright was allowed to come back for a 56 checkout and go one away himself. Wright had an excellent leg to finish off the comeback and make it 1-1 going into the doubles contest.

From there it went to pairs, Wright claimed the first leg on throw and with O'Connor missing out on holding throw, he pinned a 96 checkout on double nine with the last dart in hand.

He was bossing it on the two-dart combination finishes and this showed again with him clinically taking out 92 to go 3-0 up.
They then finalised the point to wrestle the advantage away from Ireland and go 2-1 up into a potentially decisive match for Peter Wright against Steve Lennon.

Wright struck first taking out 82 for the early lead and he extended that lead taking out 59 to go half-way there to the victory but Lennon responded taking out 52 to go 2-1 behind.

'Snakebite' produced some of his best form for this point though and went on the brink of victory with an 86 finish. From there though, Wright finished the job to secure Scotland the crown for the first time and give Wright and Anderson a deserved win.
