Gurney would have felt confident going into this tie with three consecutive wins over the current champion and stayed with him up until the very end in a valiant effort.
It was Van Gerwen who moved through to make it a seventh straight final and maintain his unbeaten record in semi-finals.
It was lively to start off with; Gurney pegged Van Gerwen back at every opportunity with neither player gaining an early break but it was Mighty Mike who had the early high average.
He would have thought going 4-3 up would have been the turning point but they were poised at 4-4. There were problems doubles wise though for Gurney who missed a golden opportunity to break to which allowed Van Gerwen to hold.
Gurney continued though to match him making it five a piece soon after with both averages just below the 100 mark.
'Superchin' claimed the first break to make it 6-5 with a 13 darter but in typical MVG fashion, this didn't last long with him levelling up at 6-6.
He regained the lead at 7-6 and then hit three on the spin with Gurney being punished for missed darts at doubles once again. He tried coming back at 9-7 but it was too big of a mountain to climb with MVG adding the finishing touches to a hard fought win.
