The Dutchman averaged 110.85 with 73% on his doubles. Van Gerwen only missed darts on the doubles in the final leg of his match against Wright.
Van Gerwen stormed into a 3-0 lead with a superb 11-darter and two ton plus finishes (102 and 105). Wright won the third leg, before the world number one moved 7-1 ahead.
The reigning world champion had not missed a dart on the doubles at that time, but was unable to keep this streak going till the end. Van Gerwen missed three match-darts before hitting double 10 to seal the win.
Rob Cross and Van Gerwen are both safe for the play-offs now, with Cross going into the final leg of the league phase as the leader of the competition. The world number two is one point ahead of his Dutch rival.
