Tonight's World Grand Prix 2017 final is special for not only the fact that a major tournament is coming to an end with shocks aplenty happening but these shocks have lead to an unlikely stat.
Simon Whitlock and Daryl Gurney are ranked 16 and 12 respectively in the PDC Order of Merit and as a result this is the first major final since 2012 where no top 10 players have been involved in the final of the tournament with the last one being in the same tournament where Michael van Gerwen won his first major title.
As a result of that win, van Gerwen has gone on a tear destroying the record books in terms of darts and so has dominated most finals whether winning or losing but due to an exit of him, Gary Anderson, Adrian Lewis, Phil Taylor etc. it threw the field wide open.
The only other recent TV final where this occurred was between Kyle Anderson and Corey Cadby at this years' Auckland Darts Masters which 'The Original' ended up winning and in this final he was 34th in the world while Cadby is unranked but is World Youth Champion and will be coming over here for multiple majors and Q-School later this year.
