The quarter-finals conclude at the PDC World Darts Championship, with Michael van Gerwen and Dave Chinsall battling for the final semi-final spot.
Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney will go head-to-head in the first of the two games on Friday evening at the Alexandra Palace. After this, a mere two sessions will stand between someone and the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship. Exciting, isn't it?
Gerwyn Price and Daryl Gurney have had more than a few battles in their time - not least the infamous Sheffield argy-bargy back in 2019. Price has come out on top more times in their head-to-head history, but both of their 2020 Premier League Darts meetings ended in a stalemate.
Gurney reacted to sealing victory over Vincent van der Voort with sombre head shakes and hands raised in apology; the 4-2 success simply hadn't met his high standards at all. And, when you consider how much of his year has been dealing with defeat, reacting to a momentous win that way is the clearest sign yet that Superchin is back.
Price, meanwhile, was a little taken aback with the nature of his 4-1 win over Mervyn King. The standard was excellent throughout, but while Price stayed the course with a superb checkout success rate of over 50 per cent, King couldn't keep up. After a couple of extremely nervy earlier triumphs, it was exactly what Price needed. Gurney will be looking to ratchet up the pressure again.
Hopefully your blood pressure has settled after Michael van Gerwen's white knuckle ride of a fourth round win over Joe Cullen. It was darts at its finest, especially having followed the Ratajski versus Clemens epic. Van Gerwen has now had a bit of everything in his three PDC World Darts Championship games this year, and he's found a way through them all, by hook or by crook.
Dave Chisnall, for all the spotlight on this tournament, has come through without much fuss, but a lot of credit. Chizzy has averaged a shade under 100 for the tournament, and has made his way past three very accomplished players in Keegan Brown, Danny Noppert and now Dimitri van den Bergh. The latter in particular did very little wrong, but ran into the Dave Chisnall that belongs at this stage of the biggest tournaments.
The Van Den Bergh win was the perfect warm-up for this match for Chisnall. He will be certain that Van Gerwen will come out firing, but there will be opportunities for him. If the Green Machine's firing on all cylinders, those chances will be few and far between. Given how long the pair have been around, it's quite amazing that this is their first ever PDC World Darts Championship meeting. Let's hope they get their Ally Pally rivalry off to a rollicking start.
