The stage is set at the Alexandra Palace one last time for this year's PDC World Darts Championship as the final is set to take place on Monday evening.

A final involving two players who have been there before with contrasting fortunes.

Michael Smith has lost out before in multiple major finals including to Peter Wright at the 2020 Masters and at the Premier League and World Matchplay.

But also lost fairly easily to Michael van Gerwen back at the 2019 PDC World Darts Championship. He will hope that lightning doesn't strike twice as he has been far and away the best player at times this tournament.

Producing classic wins over Jonny Clayton and Gerwyn Price en route to the title as well as defeating James Wade finally yesterday to reach this point, he will hope to go all the way and claim his first major title on the biggest stage in darts.

This to end the talk of Smith being in some quarters a nearly man and a player who may never reach his full potential as one of the most talented players in the sport.

Facing him will be Peter Wright who has done it before on the Ally Pally stage winning two years ago and since then after himself only just claiming the UK Open, he has gone on to steadily add most majors to his collection.

He will look to become a World Champion for the second time and join among others, Gary Anderson on that number who he defeated in the semi-finals.

At the turn of the year, he made a bold prediction to put 50p on him winning the World Matchplay and the World Championship and 1/2 of those predictions was correct. Can he make good on the other?

At times, Wright has shown his sparkling best during this tournament but his main issue might be his darts. Tinkering throughout the tournament, the wonder will be more if Wright will stick with a set of darts and more often than not, if he does he wins.

At times, he has survived scares but in a tough route through, he has done what is needed. His thrilling win over Gary Anderson was case and point as to what he can do with a 104 average and 24 180's, a record for a World Championship match.

He will hope that this is a sign of things to come when he faces Smith this evening at the Palace.
