Gerwyn Price has flipped the switch in a striking way at the start of 2026 after
a disappointing PDC World Darts Championship. The former world champion from Wales had to bow out early at Alexandra Palace, but he now seems to have put his frustrations behind him.
Not thanks to sporting success, but through a very special gift: an exclusive Toby Carvery Gold Card, which gives him a lifetime of free roast dinners at the famous British restaurant chain.
The 40-year-old Price, nicknamed “The Iceman,” endured one of the most painful World Darts Championship nights of his career. In the second round he was surprisingly beaten 3-0 by the Dutchman Wesley Plaisier. The match was over after just 22 minutes, which made the defeat sting even more. For Price it was his earliest World Championship exit since December 2018. Given his stature and experience, he was seen beforehand as one of the dark horses for the title, but those ambitions were quickly thrown out the window.
After returning from London, however,
Price revealed via Instagram that his mood had improved considerably. The Welshman shared no fewer than seven photos in which he visibly enjoys the gift that had been delivered to him. “Wow. Thank you, Toby Carvery. I can’t believe I’ve been given this Gold Card,” Price wrote. “It literally is the home of the roast and my always number one go to when I don’t want to cook. 2026 has started so well.”
Rare and exclusive gift
The Toby Carvery Gold Card is a rare and exclusive gift handed out to only a handful of well-known Britons and athletes. With the card, Price can make unlimited and free use of the chain’s offerings, best known for its traditional English Sunday roast dinners. Price also received a personal message from the company, playfully linking his achievements to their menu. “What’s better than hitting a 180? 180 roast dinners,” the message read. “Do drop by and enjoy ‘The Home of the Roast’ while you’re on the road to matches.”
Although the gift was received with a wink, it reflects Price’s popularity and character. The Welshman is known for his outspoken personality, emotional game, and physical presence. That makes him popular with part of the crowd, but also regularly a target for criticism. Still, no one can deny that Price is one of the most successful darters of recent years.
World champion in 2021
His greatest highlight came in 2021, when he became world champion for the first and so far only time. In the final he defeated Gary Anderson 7-3, cementing his place at the top of the darts world. Since then he has remained among the elite and won multiple major titles, but a second world crown has eluded him.
Gerwyn Price is currently ranked number 12 in the world
The 2026 World Championship ultimately produced the same winner as last year. The teenage sensation Luke Littler, nicknamed “The Nuke,” was crowned world champion after a convincing win over Gian van Veen. Littler pocketed a whopping one million pounds, after the organizers decided to double the prize fund. It underscores the growth and commercial pull of darts.
Price must now look ahead. With a full stomach and renewed motivation, he will turn his focus to the upcoming tournaments on the PDC Tour. Whether the Toby Carvery Gold Card actually contributes to better performances remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: even after a tough sporting blow, Gerwyn Price manages to approach life with humor and perspective. And sometimes a good roast dinner is exactly what you need to move forward again.
