Gary Anderson continued his rivalry with Michael van Gerwen on the opening night of action in Premier League Darts by dumping out 'Mighty Mike' in a 6-4 victory.

Anderson defied two 100+ finishes from the Dutchman and will now face Peter Wright in the second semi-final in Cardiff with the opening gambit seeing Jonny Clayton face James Wade.

Van Gerwen started well with a 180 and 87 checkout to hold throw. But Anderson held throw to not give MVG a chance at a break.

MVG left 72 from a 170 with Anderson back at only 155. But he spurned multiple opportunities to hold and Anderson stole a break on double 20 to go 2-1 up.

Van Gerwen stole it straight back though with a 100 checkout only for Anderson to again produce his best on MVG’s throw to go 3-2 up with a break.

But again it was missed darts for MVG as Anderson hit an 80 checkout to go 4-2 up. A 135 checkout using 25 and bull saw MVG hold throw as he looked to fire himself up.

Anderson missed 116 on double 20 for a 5-3 lead and potentially pivotally Van Gerwen broke as he was throwing for a 5-4 lead.

But he didn’t get it as Anderson missed double 11 for a 124 but returned for double two to break back and he was throwing for the win. It was a win he claimed with a 76 checkout.

While before that, Wright was super impressive in a repeat of the World Championship final this time last month against Michael Smith.

He hit a 100.13 average and three 180's and will now face his World Cup winning teammate of years gone by.

Smith started well hitting back-to-back 140’s and an 81 checkout to break throw on double 13. But Wright hit straight back with a 56 checkout.

Wright hit a 180 and double four to hold throw and go 2-1 up. A 140 left 64 for Wright for a 3-1 lead which he pinned on double 16.

Wright held throw for a 4-1 lead as he went two away from the finishing line. Smith pinned double 14 for a 13-darter to make it 4-2 but needed a break to level up.

Wright sent Smith to the brink hitting double eight for a 5-2 lead. He set up 48 for the match with Smith needing a 150 to stay in it which he pinned on double 18. But this proved the final flourish as Wright hit double five for the match.
