It is the final day at the
Austrian Darts Open and we have set our Quarter-Final line-up. Albeit it won't feature Michael van Gerwen or James Wade.
Both went out during a bumper session which saw the sublime and also question marks for the big names as it looks very likely that we will get an interesting winner come Sunday night in Graz who will claim that famous green jacket.
It could feasibly be Rob Cross who dumped out Michael van Gerwen, who reiterates constantly that he only cares about ranking action, but that only really passes muster if you manage to win said ranking action, and he was edged past by 'Voltage', who takes a big win by seeing off MVG. He too is fighting for his ranking future, so it is very much two players who needed this.
To start, it was a break as Cross led 2-1 early on. He pinned double 10 to claim the lead. Cross missed a golden chance to hold, but Van Gerwen broke back, pinning double eight for 2-2. Van Gerwen held on double 16 to go 3-2 up, but back came Cross with an 11-darter for an 84 checkout—double 16 for a 15-darter to go 4-3 up, but Cross, amid a break threat, made it 4-4.
He broke with a 68 checkout and followed that up with double one to hold and seal the win. He now faces Andrew Gilding who managed to pass the test of Kim Huybrechts with flying colours. It was a superb game with Huybrechts leading 2-1 early with a break on 68 but a 127 checkout from Gilding reduced arrears to 3-2 in favour of Huybrechts.
Huybrechts was now throwing for 4-2. Gilding broke back with an 82 checkout and was throwing for a 5-4 lead. Huybrechts broke back but Gilding did so to on double 10 and he sealed the win with a 100 checkout.
Reyes v Rock set
Cristo Reyes continues his fantastic weekend and will face Josh Rock in the Quarter-Finals. The former exchanged breaks with Noppert but Reyes hit 78 and then consolidated for double 16. It was now 3-3. A 47 checkout from Reyes saw him make it 4-3 and he was two away from the finish. Reyes broke again on double five and double 16 was pinned to win 6-3.
While Rock saw off Niko Springer. Springer led going 2-0 up, Rock broke back on double eight but with a 12-darter on double eight, he went 3-2 up. Rock broke with an 11-darter on double 16 for 4-3. But Springer broke back and hit double six to go one away at 5-4. It went all the way though as Springer missed 90 and drifted into double 18 which gave Rock another go and he hit double eight.
Josh Rock is competing in the Premier League Darts this year
The first Quarter-Final will see Kevin Doets meet Luke Woodhouse again after Doets eased past Joyce 6-2. While Woodhouse averaged 103 to ease past James Wade in a pretty emphatic victory.
Martin Schindler also continued his title defence by taking down Ross Smith with a 98 average. He saw off 'Smudger' in a repeat of last year's final and now takes on Daryl Gurney.
Gurney downed Madars Razma. He led 2-1 early and it was breaks aplenty from there as an 87 checkout followed to break at 2-2 from Razma. Gurney broke again with a 138 checkout to go 3-2 up. But it was looking likely Razma will break again for 3-3. Razma hit a 12-darter on double 20 to make it 3-3. But again a break as Gurney went 4-3 up but he finally held to go one away and then broke again with a 116 checkout.
