Belgium's own Andy Baetens successfully prevailed in a first-round tie with Jermaine Wattimena at the Belgian Darts Open, thriving in front of a partisan home crowd.
“I was in good shape today. This feels really good”, said Baetens in a post-match interview. “I've been playing at a high level for three or four months, so I was confident. But they remain pros, while I'm not, but I'm happy. I was extra motivated after it just wasn't there last year. It is also unique for our own country, to be able to play for so many people here.”
Coming through a Belgian qualifier that included 173 players, a European Tour record, Baetens now faces off against the recently crowned UK Open champion Andrew Gilding in the second round. "Yes, a lot. And everyone expected me to make it, so that puts some extra pressure," he says of the qualification process.
"I threw well then and I really do now. The audience was great too. They also cheer for everyone, without booing," he continues.
