After her historic triumph at the
Women’s World Matchplay,
Beau Greaves has once again grabbed headlines. Not for another sporting feat, but for a striking commercial partnership. Optician Specsavers has insured the eyes of the 22-year-old English star for a staggering one million pounds.
The unusual policy was revealed shortly after Greaves clinched her third
Women’s World Matchplay title in Blackpool on Wednesday. In a nerve-racking final, the Englishwoman edged former winner Fallon Sherrock 6-5 to lift the prestigious trophy for the third time. The victory also earned her a £15,000 check.
Greaves now joins a list of elite athletes and celebrities who have insured specific body parts for millions in the past. For the English player, the choice is logical, as sharp vision is, in her words, essential to perform at the highest level.
According to Greaves, her eyesight plays a crucial role in that. “I’m really proud to have won the Women’s World Matchplay for a third time. It was a tough final and matches like that come down to the finest of margins.
“In darts, having clear, reliable vision is a huge part of performing at your best. Partnering with Specsavers feels like a natural fit because my eyesight is such a big part of my game, so it makes sense to protect it.”
Striking campaign
The insurance is part of a Specsavers campaign to highlight the importance of regular eye checks. Company research shows that 78 percent of people recognize the value of good vision in sport.
At the same time, the same study shows that nearly half of respondents prioritize other things. For instance, 49 percent said they would replace a broken mobile phone sooner than schedule a health appointment, such as an eye test.
According to Neil Liddle, who oversees partnerships and sponsorship at Specsavers, that is precisely the reason behind the eye-catching move. “When you’re aiming for targets just millimetres wide, your eyesight isn’t just important – it’s everything. Yet while people recognise the importance of good vision, many are still putting other priorities ahead of looking after their eyes.
“By insuring Beau’s eyes, we want to remind everyone – not just elite athletes – to value and protect their vision by making regular eye tests a priority.”
He hopes the collaboration with Greaves will encourage people to get their eyes checked more regularly. “By insuring Beau’s eyes, we want to remind everyone, not just elite athletes, how important it is to look after your vision and to have regular eye tests.”
