Chris Dobey and
Brendan Dolan sealed their places in the second round of the
Belgian Darts Open after wins against Romeo Grbavac and Steven Strobbe respectively.
Dobey set up an intriguing second round tie with Danny Noppert in defeating Croatian World Cup representative Grbavac 6-3 with a 96 average. Both players couldn't be split in the first four legs after Grbavac put away a 74 checkout, before throwing a 14-darter to keep pace with 'Hollywood', who threw a 13-darter himself to begin his surge to victory.
There was one leg that neither will want to forget as Dobey eventually wrapped up leg six with a 25-dart break. Legs of 15 and 16 darts were enough to see him progress to Saturday's action. The former Masters champion is yet to win a Euro Tour event, his best finish being the final of the Danish Darts Open in 2019.
Dolan came through a slog of an encounter against Belgian Strobbe, winning 6-2 in a forgettable encounter. After starting the match with a 26-dart hold of throw, Dolan snapped back into the room with a 128 checkout on the bull.
This appeared to inspire Strobbe as he had his own ton plus out of 101 in the very next leg. It was almost as good as it got for the Host Nation Qualifier, who only won one more leg after that as Dolan coasted to the finish line in a match that won't go down in Euro Tour history.
Dolan will know more than anyone his level will need to improve, as he averaged just 86, when he takes on Damon Heta tomorrow afternoon.
Gian van Veen suffered a shock early exit as he was beaten 6-1 by Nordic and Baltic Qualifier
Andreas Harrysson. Harrysson averaged 107 and was 66% successful on the doubles in one of the best performances in his career.
Van Veen still had an average of 100, but was unable to do anything as the Swede finished superbly with a 132 checkout on the bull, one of four ton plus out shots from Harrysson. His reward for such a performance is a matchup with two-time world champion Gary Anderson.
