Chris Dobey triumphed on Wednesday afternoon at the 33rd Players Championship of the year, the penultimate one of the 2025 campaign. 'Hollywood' defeated Irishman William O'Connor 8-6 in the final in Wigan. As a result, Dobey climbs to eighth in the PDC Order of Merit thanks to his third Pro Tour title of the year.
That Dobey was in excellent form yesterday is clear to see in the numbers. The 35-year-old Englishman not only took the title, but also had the three highest averages of the day, the highest of which - 111.29 - came in his 6-2 quarterfinal win over Nathan Aspinall. He also achieved averages of 108.76 (in his 6-2 win at the last 32 against Jeffrey de Graaf) and 107.55 (in his 6-3 win at the last 16 against Damon Heta).
After Dobey, Aspinall was the player with the highest average of the day. 'The Asp' was too strong for Ian White in the opening round 6-2 and averaged 106.24 in that match. Aspinall was, as already mentioned, later beaten in the quarter-finals by Dobey.
Michele Turetta was - after Dobey and Aspinall - the player with the third highest average. The 40-year-old Italian, the world number 110, defeated Dutchman Jamai van den Herik 6-5 in the opening round, posting an average of 104.30. Turetta was then eventually left stranded one round later after a 6-3 defeat against O'Connor.
Martijn Dragt was the Dutchman with the highest average at Players Championship 33. Dragt defeated Irishman Dylan Slevin 6-1 in his opening match and averaged 103.57 in that match. For Dragt, the tournament came to an end one round later after a 6-5 defeat against his compatriot Wessel Nijman.
The Players Championship continues today with the 34th and final tournament of the year. For several players, it marks the final chance to secure guaranteed qualification for the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship.
