Joe Cullen has advanced to the last eight at the
World Grand Prix at the expense of
Daryl Gurney. Gurney wasn't able to resume aside from the first set after his win over Michael van Gerwen in the first round and went down 3-2 against 'The Rockstar' in a mediocre match.
It was a disappointing match from both players. Cullen had an average of 82.52, compared to 80.10 for Gurney. The doubles were also poor from both players. Gurney had an opening percentage of 43 percent and a doubles percentage of 32 percent. For Gurney, the percentages were even lower. The Northern Irishman had 33 percent when opening, and a finishing percentage of just 27 percent.
Cullen already showed resilience in the first round by surviving going a set down against Chris Dobey by turning a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 victory. Against Gurney, he even fell behind twice at a break.
The first set went 3-1 to Gurney, after which the two-time major winner missed three chances to win set two as well. A 15-darter second set went 3-2 to Cullen, who then levelled the score.
Set three was an easy win for Gurney, who recorded a 13-darter, 15-darter and a 14-darter in succession. The doubles then let him down again, however, as "Superchin" missed eight chances to take the first leg of the fourth set. Cullen then won the set 3-0.
The first leg of set five also went to Cullen, giving him his first lead of the match. A 14-darter doubled the lead. The former Masters champion then ended the match with a 20-darter.
For Cullen, it is the third time in his career that he has joined the last eight at the World Grand Prix. In the quarterfinals, he faces the winner of the duel between Dave Chisnall and Dimitri van den Bergh.
