James Wade will be Mike de Decker's opponent in the quarterfinals of the
World Grand Prix. 'The Machine' won 3-0 in sets over
Gerwyn Price on Thursday night to advance to the second round.
Although this tournament is tailor-made for Wade, the left-handed darter is in the quarterfinals of the double-in double-out tournament for the first time since 2014. In 2014, Wade was the losing finalist, while he managed to win the tournament in 2007 and 2010.
It was a solid performance by Wade, who posted an average of 90. He had an opening percentage of 41 percent and by the finish the percentage was at 45 percent.
Wade opened the match by winning his own leg, but missed six chances to break Price. The Iceman held, after which the next two legs also went with the darts. Wade started the fifth leg of the first set and with a 25 finish 'The Machine' took the first set.
With a 16-darter and a 96 finish, Wade then took a 2-0 lead in set two. Price threw out 78 to stay in the set, but could not keep up with his English opponent in the fourth leg. Wade fired a 13-darter to make it 2-0 in sets.
A 14-darter also immediately brought Wade the lead in the third set. The Englishman then missed nine darts to open the second leg, but got away with it as Price also fumbled on the doubles. A 24-darter made it 2-0 for Wade, leaving him with just one more leg to win. Price managed to postpone his impending defeat with a 130 finish, but then Wade finished the job with a 16-darter.
As ever from the Machine an exceptional job and as he looks to continue to prove people wrong he does so with style in taking out the former champion and last year's finalist who keeps saying a performance is coming but hasn't shown it as of yet.
