Jonny Clayton laid claim to his
World Darts Championship aspirations with a brilliant win over Gabriel Clemens to reach the Last 16 where he will play Michael Smith for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
"I got out the blocks really fast. I had to, I knew what kind of game I'd get because Gabriel is fantastic. I've played against Gabriel a few times on the floor, I don't know what the stats are but it's always a tough match. I just try to concentrate on just getting out of the blocks fast and I think I done my job," said Clayton post match.
It was a hard act to follow for Clayton who went on after the Price-Huybrechts classic.
"It'd have been a late night if I'd have to gone to 5-5, it was a fantastic match that game before. It was getting longer and I was just thinking am I going to play tonight or what."
Having never got this far in the World Championship, he takes a pragmatic approach to these games.
"It's always in the back of your mind but you still go out to play that game and if it's your day, it's going to be your day which it was today and hopefully I can continue marching on."
Next up will be Michael Smith and he isn't looking ahead to Gerwyn Price as of yet.
"That game is going to be massive. The way Michael is playing, I think it's going to be a belter and the best man wins. Gezzy obviously has to do his job and if we both get past our games, we meet in the Quarters."
A win which moves him into the top six in the world after starting the year by virtue of only winning unranked majors just inside the top 16. But he still has two ultimate goals.
"I'd love to be World Number One, it's like everyone else we all chase a dream and I'm still in this tournament to pick my dream up and that'll be that trophy at the end of it."
