The action has began on Saturday night at the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim with Jonny Clayton and Max Hopp picking up big wins to begin proceedings.

Clayton began with a 6-4 victory over Chris Dobey which does his World Grand Prix hopes the world of good. Before tonight, 'The Ferret' sat outside both the Order of Merit spots (19th) and ProTour Order of Merit (20th).

But due to the nature of the latter in particular with Clayton despite his position only being £1,000 off Jeffrey de Zwaan who is out in 16th, it could be an important weekend for the Welshman.

He hit an average just shy of 100 and 55% on the doubles en route to seeing off the Bedlington ace who looks handily placed to potentially claim a spot himself.

Home favourite Hopp is also through to the Last 16 after a 6-4 victory over number two seed Ian White.

Despite 'Diamond's excellence on the European Tour previously, it is a barren weekend for the Stoke ace and he is in serious danger of not making it to the European Championship with the truncated season meaning no wins for White so far could prove costly.

For 'The Maximiser', it is a return to form so far with five 180's to his name hit throughout the tie and he will look to continue that on the final day.
