Cullen cruises past Rodriguez, Cross too strong for Doets as Players Championship Finals begin

Albeit at an earlier time than usual, the Players Championship Finals have begun with victories on the main stage for Rob Cross and Joe Cullen so far in Minehead.

Cross proved too strong for Kevin Doets to start the day off with a 6-3 success over the young Dutchman. Producing a 96 average, a high checkout of 143 and 40% on his doubles, it was a successful opener for 'Voltage'.

He will face the winner of Gabriel Clemens and Gary Anderson who will play later on Stage Two. While Cullen will face either Raymond van Barneveld or Kim Huybrechts after easing past Rowby-John Rodriguez.

A potentially tricky first assignment on paper, he sealed a 6-2 win with a 92 average, three 180's and a 132 checkout as part of two ton plus efforts from the Rockstar alongside 6/15 on the outer ring. A 105 in the penultimate leg did the trick also as he broke and went on to seal it.

Elsewhere, Callan Rydz snuck through against Madars Razma pouncing on 19 missed darts at doubles for a 6-5 success, while in the display of the day so far, Andrew Gilding averaged over 101 in taking out Ricky Evans in a 6-2 win to start proceedings on Stage Two.
