Dave Chisnall and Jonny Clayton have both started the new Pro Tour season with a defeat in the first round of Players Championship 1. Both former Premier League stars were stunned by new Tour Card holders.
Italian, World Cup of Darts star, Michele Turetta immediately caused a resounding surprise in the first round at the start of the first Players Championship tournament of 2024. The first-ever Italian Tour Card holder defeated Chisnall 6-1. Turetta recorded a handsome average of 97.89 against the number-one seed.
Elsewhere, Thibault Tricole saw off Clayton 6-5, Danny Noppert won 6-2 against Owen Bates, whilst Richard Veenstra had the same result against former world youth champion Josh Rock. On the other hand, two Dutchmen already had to leave the tournament. Dirk van Duijvenbode went down 6-4 against Nick Kenny, while Geert Nentjes was beaten 6-1 by Gary Anderson.
In addition to Chisnall, Van Duijvenbode, Clayton and Rock, three other seeded players were eliminated early. Dom Taylor stunted 6-4 against Masters champion Stephen Bunting. Alan Soutar settled with Damon Heta (6-4), while Lukas Wenig was 6-3 too strong for Joe Cullen.
