De Sousa into Masters semi-final for first time after edging past Whitlock in decider

Jose de Sousa has ended the run of Simon Whitlock at 2022 Masters and will face the winner of Michael van Gerwen and Luke Humphries for a spot in the final later.

De Sousa saw off Whitlock 10-9 with a 96.2 average, five 180's and 63% on the doubles with 'The Wizard' fighting back to force a decider only to produce a poor leg when it mattered most.

Whitlock landed seven perfect darts going for a nine-darter before hitting double 10 to make it 2-2 against De Sousa. He went from the sublime to double one and moved 3-2 up.

De Sousa replied straight away with a 141 checkout to make it 3-3 but no player had the advantage as they headed into the interval at 5-5.

‘The Special One’ started the 11th leg with back to back 180’s and took out 82 for a 12-darter to make it 6-5. He went two clear from there at 8-6 up maintaining a two-leg cushion with Whitlock needing a break.

Whitlock whittled down 109 to double eight to go 8-7 behind but De Sousa was throwing to go one away. De Sousa missed the chance to hold and Whitlock took aim at 68 on double four for a break back and he was throwing to go one away.

He did with a 14-darter in the form of a 76 checkout on double eight. De Sousa sent it all the way but Whitlock had the throw.

But a poor leg saw De Sousa snatch it on double 20 with Whitlock back on 185 only being able to pressurise.
