Peter Wright will have been fearing the worst when he came onto stage unwell clutching a hand towel over his face, coughing and not performing his trademark dance. But bizarrely it was one of his best performances in a long time as he downed Jermaine Wattimena at the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship.
In what is a vital tournament for his darting future realistically, he saw off Wesley Plaisier emotionally to start and then said it would be him v Barney in the Last 16. Barney then lost but it could still be Luke Humphries who faces Nick Kenny next.
But against a highly touted player in Jermaine Wattimena who has had the year of his life, he was comfortable at times sealing it 4-2 in sets and he is now through illness or not.

Despite all the talk of his chest infection beforehand, Wright was down to business despite showing signs still of not being 100% during the breaks. He sealed the opener 3-1 with a 98.8 average, three 180's and 75% on the doubles.
But part of the ease of the display was down to Wattimena's poor doubling. He hit 1/12 as he sunk to a 2-0 deficit and Wright eased to the second set 3-0 to move into a double set lead.
Albeit Wattimena tried to remain on level terms and not allow Wright to run away with the contest. He hit an exceptional 144 checkout in the deciding leg of the third set to halve the deficit.
But Wright shut the door again. He took out 87 on the bull to close out the fourth set without reply and restored a two-set cushion with seven 180's to his name.
Wattimena fired back quickly with an 81 checkout to clinch the fifth set without reply. But Wright surged into a 2-0 lead in the next set with a 110 checkout. He then finished it off with a 68 checkout on double four to claim the win 4-2.
